According to Lerner, "Paralytic, diarrhetic, and amnesic shellfish poisoning all have the capability of making large numbers of people ill and can cause death in cases of extreme exposure or sensitivity. Because of the risks of poisening associated with eating marine shellfish, many countries routinely monitor the toxicity of these foods using various sorts of assays" (2004, p.3389-3390)

Brevetoxin is the major cause of Red Tides in Florida, but the air can be 50x higher than the concentration in the water, which is why people on the beach are so effected. Beach-goers are urged to wear a respiratory face mask if any respiratory problems are acquired.

There are some scientists that think the Loop Current, brings Caribbean seawater to Florida's West Coast may initiate a bloom because it causes upwelling of nutrients as a force of the current surges against the shelf, creating growing conditions. Red Tide is then transported to nutrient-rich shallow waters by wind, where the algae multiply to harmful levels. Although there are many other scientists with different theories they all include the three basic elements needed to initiate an algal bloom.

History Dating back to the 16th century, there are stories stated by Indians that Florida had toxic water that killed birds and fish. Although Indians noted the toxic water in the 16th century, Red Tide was never scientifically documented until 1844. Since this time, there have been many incidences of Red Tides on the coastal region of Florida, up to the most recent notable in 2005. In early 2005, algal species flooded the water with toxins and it lasted for more than a year, and marine life began to quickly die off. The Florida Red Tide occurs almost every year to varying degrees. Red Tide occurs world wide. South of Florida, in Costa Rica, Red Tide usually only lasts a few weeks, but this year the Red Tide is still reeking havoc and it began in February.
